Support for adults with autism

Several constituents have contacted me recently about the Adult Autism Strategy.

I have signed the parliamentary motion supporting the strategy (EDM 714). The motion commends the government for accepting the recommendations of two recent reports on supporting people with autism through adulthood and calls for the effective delivery of the Adult Autism Strategy to ensure that it will result in significant change for people on the ground.

I have also been in touch with Phil Hope, the minister responsible for care services, to discuss some of the issues surrounding the strategy. You can read a copy of the minister’s response online here.

Over the last year I have been in contact with the National Autistic Society and Autism West Midlands about ensuring people with autism get the support they need to fulfil their potential.

In particular, last year I supported the NAS ‘Don’t write me off’ campaign which aimed to stop adults with autism being written-off by the employment and benefits system. It is crucial that people with serious, lifelong and disabling conditions such as autism get the help they need when seeking employment and are supported financially when they cannot work.

I have also asked some parliamentary questions on this issue in the House of Commons, which you can read online here.
