Future of Cadbury
For many people, one of the first things that springs to mind when they think about Easter is Cadbury’s Creme Egg. The Creme Egg plant in Bournville can produce more than 1.5 million eggs every day and, if you laid all the eggs made at the plant end to end, they would stretch all the way from Bournville to Australia.
However, Easter this year is an uncertain time for the people who work at Cadbury – and for all those in our local community for whom the company and its legacy mean so much. Working with other Labour MPs in Birmingham and the trade unions at Cadbury, I opposed the Kraft takeover and campaigned to keep Cadbury independent.
The protection of jobs and the long term future of Cadbury’s in Birmingham will remain our priority in the weeks and months ahead. The Cadbury saga also underlines the need for stronger protection against hostile takeovers in the UK and I have been raising this in Parliament and with government ministers.
