COPENHAGEN 10:10 CAMPAIGN MORE INFO PLEDGE SUPPORT

In seven days time world leaders will gather in Copenhagen for the UN Climate Change Summit. It is vital that they secure a global deal on climate change that is ambitious, effective and fair.

Today (30 November 2009) I have written to the energy and climate change secretary, Ed Miliband, to encourage the UK to be as ambitious as possible in securing a global climate change deal in Copenhagen.

You can read a pdf copy of my letter online here

It said:

Dear Ed

I wanted to write to you ahead of the climate change summit in Copenhagen next week. Hundreds of my constituents have contacted me about climate change over the last few years. I write on behalf of all of them – any myself – to encourage you to be as ambitious as possible in securing a global deal on climate change in Copenhagen.

More recently, over the last few months many of my constituents have signed up to the 10:10 campaign to cut the country's carbon emissions. It has been fantastic to hear that so many people here in Northfield are taking steps to personally reduce their carbon footprint – from increasing their use of public transport to installing solar panels.

It is important that we each do our bit to help tackle climate change. But it is also vital that we secure a global deal on climate change that is ambitious, effective and fair.

I know how passionately you feel about this issue. And, as a Labour MP, I am proud that our government is at the forefront of efforts to get the best possible deal at Copenhagen. When you and the Prime Minister go to Copenhagen next week, you will have the support of so many people up and down the country – including my constituents here in Birmingham Northfield.

Best wishes,
Richard Burden MP
