Collingwood Day Centre (15 May 2009)

Good news – today I received confirmation from the Council’s Oversight and Scrutiny Committee that they will be calling-in the decision around day services for adults with learning disabilities. (What does this mean? Read more here.)

The issue of the proposed closures was also raised today at the regular meeting between Birmingham MPs and the City Council.

Collingwood Day Centre (13 May 2009)

Earlier this week the Birmingham City Council Cabinet announced they have agreed to go ahead with the closure of Collingwood and Aldridge Road Day Centres.

This decision was made despite representations that I and others have made – you can read my letters online here.

Yesterday I wrote again to Sue Anderson, the Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, expressing my concern about the Cabinet’s decision. And today I have also written to the Chair of the Council’s Oversight and Scrutiny Committee to ask if they are going to “call-in” the decision on day centres for further examination.

Collingwood Day Centre (5 May 2009)

Last week, Birmingham City Council announced that its Cabinet will shortly be asked to approve the closure of Collingwood Day Centre in West Heath. The proposed closure is part of a citywide review of day services for adults with learning disabilities.

Nobody could argue with the need to review day services across the city to make them fit for the 21st century. However, I have big concerns about how the Council have gone about this review and the decisions they are making. I have been in regular correspondence with Councillor Sue Anderson, the Council Cabinet Member responsible for leading on these changes, both requesting further information about council actions and putting forward my concerns.

I hope to have a link to these letters and Sue Anderson’s replies on this website soon, in order that you can have a clearer idea of what my concerns are on this important issue and what I have been doing about them. >>> letters now available online here.

In the meantime, if you want to get in touch with me about this issue you can find all of my contact details online here.
