MPs' expenses and allowances -
This morning the Committee on Standards in Public Life published their report on MPs' expenses and allowances. You can read their statement and download a copy of the report online here.
I haven’t yet had the opportunity to read the report in full. However, from what Sir Christopher Kelly said in his press conference this morning it sounds to me as if there are some good recommendations in this report – but there are others which, in my view, could end up costing the tax payer more not less, which may create perverse incentives for some MPs to stay when the time has come for them to move on, and which may make it more difficult for MPs to communicate effectively with their constituents.
Whether or not I’m right about this is not the relevant issue. This is an independent report. Quite rightly, the decision on how it will be implemented will be made by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority rather than by me or by any other MP.
You can read a copy of an article I wrote on MPs' expenses in May online here.
