60 years of the NHS

The NHS was created 60 years ago and is the world’s largest publically funded health service.

You can read the article I wrote to mark the 60th anniversary online here.

The NHS is our nation’s proudest achievement and we should all have a say in its future. I would like to know what you think about some of the proposals for further improving the NHS and about what you think should be the priorities for local health services here in Northfield.

I would be very grateful if you could complete the quick survey below to let me know what you think so that I can represent you effectively when these issues are discussed in Parliament.

NHS Survey

Do you think that the NHS should have a Constitution that sets out its principles, values and commitments?

Should the NHS be a service that prevents ill health and not just a service to treat people who are sick?

Do you feel that the NHS is accountable?

If not, how could it be made more accountable?
Do you think that more should be done to enable patients and the public the opportunity to influence and scrutinise NHS performance and priorities?

Did you know that by December 2008 every patient is guaranteed to start treatment within 18 weeks of seeing their GP?

Nearly everyone can now see a GP within 48 hours. Do you think that GP surgeries should be open in the evenings and at weekends?

What do you think that the priorities should be for improving people’s health here in Northfield? Pick your top three:
