Water and sanitation -

Several constituents have contacted me recently in support of a campaign by the global poverty charity Tearfund on water and sanitation in developing countries.

Tackling poor quality water and sanitation in developing countries is a vital issue. Clean water and adequate sanitation are at the heart of development. They are not just essential needs – they also help prevent disease, bring girls into school, relieve the burden on women and improve food production.

As you may know, I am a member of the House of Commons International Development Committee. In 2007 the Committee published a report of our inquiry looking at sanitation and water. You can read a copy of our report online here.

You can also read more about my work on the International Development Committee online here.

It is important that international development issues are raised in Parliament and campaigns like this play a valuable part in making sure that happens.

A lot has been achieved over the last 13 years. The UK is now a world leader in the international development community and we have taken a lead role on a range of initiatives - from the Millennium Development Goals to cancelling the debt of some of the world's poorest countries. These things simply wouldn't have happened without a Labour government.

Labour has a record to be proud of - but there is still so much more to do.

We should recognise that a lot has been achieved over the last 13 years. The UK is now a world leader in the international development community and we have a record to be proud of – but there is still so much more to do.
